Trekking in Nepal

Choose a Nepal trek by time, difficulty and budget. Nepal routes range from short Annapurna foothill walks to high-altitude Everest and Manaslu journeys. The quickest way to narrow the options is to decide how many days you have, how much altitude you want, and whether you prefer a famous route or a quieter trail.

Nepal has eight of the world’s fourteen highest peaks. The trails approaching them pass through rhododendron forests, glacier valleys, working monasteries and villages that have welcomed trekkers for generations.

Routes for every level

  • Everest Base Camp Trek: the classic high-altitude journey through Sherpa villages to Base Camp and Kala Patthar.
  • Annapurna Circuit Trek: an 18-day circuit crossing from green valleys into the high desert beyond Thorong La.
  • Gokyo Lakes Trek: turquoise lakes, Cho La Pass and Everest views on a demanding 17-day route.
  • Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek: a more approachable introduction to Himalayan trekking and Annapurna sunrise views.

More Than Mountains

Living culture

Stay in lodges run by Gurung, Tamang and Sherpa families. Visit working monasteries like Tengboche, where monks still hold daily prayers. Time it with Dashain, Tihar or Mani Rimdu and the trails are at their liveliest.

Scenery that changes daily

Subtropical forest, alpine meadow and glacier moraine, sometimes all in one week. And then there is Mustang, whose desert canyons and cave dwellings feel like a different country altogether.

Travel that gives back

Lodges, homestays and local guides keep your trip money in the villages you walk through. National parks and conservation areas protect the forests and wildlife, and porter welfare standards keep improving.

When to Trek

Autumn

September to November

Clear skies and stable weather. The most popular season for good reason.

Spring

March to May

Warm days and rhododendron forests in full bloom.

Winter

December to February

Cold but quiet. Lower treks like Poon Hill are at their most peaceful.

Monsoon

June to August

Most trails are wet, but Upper Mustang sits in the rain shadow and stays dry.
