Everest Base Camp Trek Overview
The Everest Base Camp Trek follows the same high valley route that Hillary and Tenzing walked in 1953. Over 15 days, you travel from Lukla airport (2,860 m) through the Khumbu Valley to the foot of the Khumbu Icefall at Base Camp (5,364 m / 17,598 ft), then climb Kala Patthar (5,545 m) before dawn for the most photographed sunrise in the Himalayas.
What to Expect on the Trail
The route gains altitude in a steady, manageable progression. You pass through Sherpa villages — Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche — each with teahouse accommodation and home-cooked meals. Two rest days are built into the schedule at Namche (3,440 m) and Dingboche (4,410 m) to allow your body to adjust before moving higher.
Trail conditions are well-maintained and clearly marked throughout. No technical climbing is required. The challenge is sustained altitude, cumulative distance, and consecutive days on foot. Most trekking days involve 4–7 hours of walking on stone paths and valley trails. Your guide monitors everyone daily with a pulse oximeter from Namche onward.
Who This Trek is Best For
This trek suits adults in good cardiovascular health who exercise regularly. No prior high-altitude or Himalayan experience is needed — you should be comfortable walking 6–8 hours at a steady pace carrying a daypack. We recommend March–May and September–November for optimal weather and trail conditions.
