Upper Mustang Trek Overview
Upper Mustang is a restricted-area trek north of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The route follows the Kali Gandaki corridor from Jomsom and Kagbeni toward Lo Manthang, through dry valleys, eroded cliffs, villages, monasteries and former trans-Himalayan trade paths.
This is a culturally focused trek for travelers who are comfortable with wind, sun, long walking days and simple mountain lodging. A special restricted-area permit and applicable conservation permissions are required; current rules, access, fees and route conditions must be confirmed before booking.
Compare this route with the Annapurna Circuit Trek or the Manaslu Circuit Trek if you want a different balance of high passes, road access and cultural scenery.
Why consider Upper Mustang
- Walk from Jomsom and Kagbeni toward Lo Manthang through a dry trans-Himalayan landscape
- Explore the walled settlement of Lo Manthang with local cultural guidance
- Allow a dedicated day for the Chhoser cave and monastery landscape
- Travel on a restricted-area route where permits and responsible conduct matter
- Balance long, windy trail days with flexible pacing and acclimatization
- Use a return route through the Kali Gandaki corridor rather than retracing every overnight stop
- Keep weather, domestic flights, road access and local permissions in the operating plan
